After nine days in ICU, NRS doctor discharged, to visit Raipur home

KOLKATA: Yash Tekwani, the intern at NRS Medical College and Hospital, who, along with fellow intern Paribaha Mukhopadhyay, was injured during the mob attack on the night on June 10 following the death of an elderly patient, was discharged from hospital on Wednesday. Back from the ICU at NRS after nine days, the young doctor is eager to resume work but doctors have advised him rest.

“I have been told that the chief minister has assured the doctors of certain measures to prevent mob attacks. I understand that the situation cannot improve overnight. But I trust that things will start changing for better from now on,” the young doctor.

Hit by a brick on the head, Tekwani, who was on duty at the emergency ward, was treated at the ICU of NRS Medical College and Hospital. His received six stitches and the scalp also developed oedema, which luckily did not percolate to the brain tissues. “The assault left me disoriented the first two days. I had no idea about the protest. My friends told me about it only on the fourth or fifth day, after I was in a more stable condition,” Tekwani said.

Thanking those who supported the movement by junior doctors, Tekwani said, “This was required so that such incidents can be prevented in future. Thanks to my friends and teachers for looking after me well. ”

Tekwani has not let his parents visit him in Kolkata as he feared the protest might worry them even more. Now that he has been discharged from hospital, he will go home to recuperate, as advised by doctors. But before leaving, he plans to visit Mukhopadhyay and try to talk him him of his trauma. “Internship is a crucial part of my training. We are doctors and we cannot afford to keep ourselves away from patients. I would have loved to join duty immediately, had the doctors not advised complete rest. I will return soon with renewed energy,” Yash said.
