KOLKATA : Data from the last couple of years have showed that the city has evolved from being a transit channel for drugs to a major consumption hub for narcotics. Also kolkata city has a niche group of drug abusers who have moved beyond ganja and charas.   They are ready to shell out anything to lay their hands on more harmful drug varieties like Yaba, liquid LSD and amphetamine and the cheaper ‘khat’ (a narcotic that’s widely sold as green tea).  

Sources claimed there has been a massive change in the clientèle too. “Now, there are specific demands from clients. The fact that college students and professionals were involved in the drugs cartels was alarming,” an officer said. “This is an indication that youths are taking to expensive drugs as they now control considerable wealth,” he added.

NCB sources in eastern zone said that over the past two years, more than 160kg of different types of psychotropic drugs had been seized in the city and on its fringes.
