kolkata mayor ask the public for maintain peace in celebration of Eid-uz-Zoha festival

KOLKATA: City mayor and one of Trinamool´s key leaders, Firhad Hakim, has called for restrained and sensitive celebrations ahead of the Eid-uz-Zoha festival slated for August 12.

Sabai ke sangjata thakte hobe, sensitive hote hobe (Everyone has to be restrained and sensitive), Hakim said on Wednesday. Someone´s ananda (happiness) should not be the cause of someone else´s nirananda (unhappiness), he said at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters while appealing for greater sensitivity.

The mayor earlier met officials of the KMC´s solid waste, drainage and water supply departments to chalk out a plan for the post-festival clean-up on August 12. A special task force, comprising 2,500 conservancy department staff, has been formed to launch special clean-up drives in areas like Metiabruz, Garden Reach, Ekbalpore, Kidderpore, Park Circus, Tiljala, Topsia, Rajabazar and other localities where Muslims reside in large numbers.

Eid-uz-Zoha, also called Bakr-Eid, is celebrated with traditional fervour and involves animal sacrifice.

We want the festival to be celebrated in the right spirit without inconveniencing others, who may include those who are participating in the festival. Body parts of a sacrificed animal lying in the open may shock someone, the mayor said.
