Marine engineer found hanging in Kolkata

KOLKATA: A 31-year-old marine engineer was found hanging in his Bansdroni residence on Monday night. The engineer, Saikat Ghosh, left behind a suicide note and didn’t blame anyone for the incident. The victim’s father, however, alleged Ghosh’s wife had been mentally harassing his son prompting him to end his life.

Police said they are probing the abetment charges. A post-mortem, too, has been conducted at the Kantapukur police morgue. Preliminary inquiry indicated Ghosh may have taken his own life but a final autopsy report is still awaited. “The matter is under investigation. We will be speaking to the family members and others who may have known the victim and interacted with him during the day. We will probe the events leading to the death,” an officer said.

Police sources said Ghosh got married in June 2018. He had a courtship of over four years leading to the marriage. His wife works with a top MNC which has offices in Kolkata. After marriage, he went on duty in the sea in November. Since then he has sailed several times. He returned only a few days back, on March 28.

This time too, Ghosh was scheduled to sail again in a few weeks.

“He has written a fairly long suicide note. That is being examined and a probe is on,” an officer said. According to Saikat’s father, he had been a victim of marital discord, which prompted him to end his life. Ghosh’s parents, police said, embraced Vaishnavism and stayed separately. “His father alleged the couple were constantly squabbling after his return,” an officer said.

Police said the victim, when found late on Monday, was taken to the M. R. Bangur hospital where he was declared dead. After an inquest on Tuesday, the body was taken for post mortem. A case has been registered based on the complaint, said an officer.
