KOLKATA : After the  Gariahat crossing fire incidedent, Firhad Hakim has decided to ban the plastic uses by next week. He asked supritendents of all municipal market to ensure that hawkers don´t use plastic sheets. And also equested police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to instruct all police stations to keep vigil on the use of plastics by hawkers.

In 2014 58 identified places where declared as ´no hawking zones´ but the hawkers returned gradually over the past three years, conceded a civic official. And now the KMC decided to enforce ban on hawking at ´no hawking zones´ like hospital premises, academic institute qand heritage buildings.

some hawkers hardly care for the rules. New hawkers are also grabbing pavements and creating real problems for pedestrians. This can be stopped only when police and the civic administration will become alert and act decisively to drive them out,” Hawker committee leader Saktiman Ghosh said.
