Waste Segregation Plan in 20 city wards, KMC

KOLKATA : The KMC is ready to introduce waste segregsation plan in 20 city wards,For reducing the harmfull effect of mixed waste disintegrates, which releases toxic chemical that cause a long term damage to the city enviroment.

This the first step towards a more scientific handling of municipal solid waste, which is currently a mixture of household green waste and hazardous material even recyclable. Segregation will also significantly reduce the volume of waste that is transported to dumpyard. Currently, 4,500 tonnes of municipal solid waste is dumped at Dhapa.

According to the plan, each household in the ward will be handed out two waste bins, green and white. While the green bin will be used for biodegradable wastes like vegetable peels, paper etc, the white bin is for hazarddous or non bio-degradable waste like plastics, tetra packs etc. The KMC conservancy staff will collect waste from the two bins separately. While those from the green bin will go into production of fertilizer, the ones from the white bin will be taken to small industries.

“This is a unique scheme where citizens have to play the most important role and cooperate with the civic staff. If we can successfully launch it and sustain the drive, it will go a long way,” the mayor said.
