Police commissioner Rjeev Kumar had written to CBI seeking the break

KOLKATA : After five-day interrogation CBI  on Wednesday gave Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar a break at Shillong. The temporary reprieve followed Kumar’s request that he be allowed time to reply to a contempt notice from the Supreme Court.  

On Tusday, Kumar had written to CBI seeking the break, citing some unavoidable engagements, including handing over charge as police commissioner. The agency, however, indicated that Kumar might be summoned again after February 20.

“He had asked for a leave from the examination, and we have accepted his plea,” said a CBI spokesperson. “It has not been concluded from our side. We will, in the meantime, verify the statements he has made in the past few days,” added a CBI officer.  

The central agency sources have pointed out that the prime focus of the five-day interrogation was on the issue of call detail records (CDRs), which they claimed, had been doctored by the special investigating team (SIT) — then headed by Kumar —beforethey werehandedover. The CBI claimed they had been asking for the relevant CDRs for a long time.
