Bank account opening at Dhanbad jail

Dhanbad: Prisoners of Dhanbad jail are all set to have a bank account in State Bank of India (SBI) under the Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana.

SBI has opened a counter in the jail premises to open accounts of over 1100 inmates.

In case of non availability of prisoner’s ID card or Adhaar card the jail authorities’ issues them identification.

Jail Superintendent Sudhir Chandra Jha while talking to TOI said “I have taken this initiative to charge them with some sense of security and self respect.

Most of the inmates don’t have a bank account and this would be useful for them when they go out in the society”.

According to the bank officials the target is to cover every inmate of the jail.

The passbooks would be delivered to the inmates within a few days.

Patal Mahato a three months old inmate who got his account opened, happily said “I never had a bank account all these years.

After I get released, I would be able to deposit a part of whatever I earn”.

When asked whether he knows the benefit of Jan Dhan Yojana, he said “we get an accidental cover of 1 lakh rupees.
