Mamata Banerjee keeps her word, visits Paribaha Mukhopadhyay at hospital

KOLKATA: During her meeting with junior doctors at Nabanna on Monday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had said she would visit Paribaha once they withdrew their agitation. True to her word, Banerjee rushed to Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (INK), where Paribaha is being treated, later in the evening. It was the Mamata, known for her humane face, at the hospital who showered her affection and expressed concern over the health of the injured intern of NRS Hospital.

The CM looked at Paribaha’s head injury. The wound had been kept open for healing. She was appalled that he had required 13 stitches. She also checked on the channel for IV fluid administration. “I know how painful are these channels that have been put for IV fluid and medication. I myself had to undergo the same when I was admitted after being assaulted,” the CM told Paribaha.

The CM was accompanied by government officials, including state health secretary Rajiva Sinha. She spent close to 15 minutes interacting with Paribaha and doctors. “In addition to enquiring about Paribaha’s health, the CM also assured him of all help and asked him not to worry about anything and that he would recover fully from the injury. Paribaha looked happy and assured,” Sinha said.

Even as Dr RP Sengupta, the chairman of INK told the CM that the hospital was ready to waive the Paribaha’s treatment expenses, Banerjee appreciated the gesture but insisted that the government will bear the cost. “Kobe bari jete parbe (When can he go home)?” Mamata asked Senguputa. She was told that the decision on his discharge will be taken in a few days. The CM left the hospital after wishing Paribaha a speedy recovery.

Despite the skull bone fracture doctors said luckily, the bone had not broken into fragments and that the depressed bone had not caused a deep injury to the brain. He had undergone a surgery to bring the depressed bone up on Tuesday itself. Initially, kept in the ICU, Paribaha has been in the general ward for the past few days.

Though his condition is stable, doctors said that he still suffers from anxiety and trauma. He has complaints of vision and balancing problems.

“The CM’s visit and the withdrwal of the agtiation should soothe his nerves to certain extent and give some relief from the anxiety,” Sengupta said.
