Truck driver killed in the accident at Vidyasagar Setu

KOLKATA: A mini truck hit a lorry parked on the northern slope of the Vidyasagar Setu around 4. 30am on Monday. The driver of the mini truck, Rangalal Roy (35), was killed in the accident.

The incident occurred on a day when the Kolkata Police launched its road safety week.

Roy suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to SSKM Hospital where he died. A case was registered at the Hastings police station and a probe is on to find out why the lorry was parked on a bridge that sees regular VIP movement.

According to the police, the helper of the lorry claimed that their vehicle had broken down and the rear lights of the vehicle was on so that others approaching it would steer clear of it. We are verifying the claims, an officer said.

Police now want to introduce important changes for trucks entering or leaving the city. Kolkata Police is likely to use its own database so that spot e-challans can be used even for trucks. Since most vehicles that flout rules originate from Kolkata (except trucks) there is a good possibility we can track them down, he said.

But Kolkata Police has begun tabulating the registration numbers of trucks. Spot challans are not possible at night. This change in policy will help us ensure that we can send e-challans to the drivers, the senior officer added. The helper of the lorry was detained.
