Headmistress suspended over extra fees

Dhanbad : The headmistress of a state-run school in Jharia was suspended on Wednesday for charging students additional fees for maintenance.

After getting a complaint against Shakila Bano, the headmistress of KC Girls Middle School, district superintendent of education BB Singh suspended her following an inquiry.

“Taking money in the name of school maintenance is a major offence,” said Singh. The headmistress has admitted to her mistake.

When members of Prayas, a social organisation working in the field of education, requested the headmistress to admit kids of the nearby areas, she demanded `200 for each admission.

After she refused admissions without the amount, Prayas members recorded her in a hidden camera.

"We urged headmistress to admit children of the area, but she demanded money," said Chandan Kumar, a member of Prayas.

The video clip was handed over to education department officials.

Under Right to Education (RTE) Act-2009, each child in the 6-14 age gruoup has the right to free and compulsory education.

Prayas members said all the students have been charged the additional amount.

“During the admission, the school charges `200 in the name of school maintenance," said a parent.
